The iPad is not starting

This article offers step-by-step guidance for troubleshooting the common startup problems with the iPad

  1. Check Power & Charging
    • Plug into power: Connect the iPad to a known-good charger and cable. Use an Apple-certified charger (20W+ for newer iPads).
    • Wait a few minutes: If the battery is fully drained, the screen may stay black for up to 5–10 minutes before showing the charging icon.
    • Check the cable & adapter: Test with another charger and cable if available.
  2. Force Restart the iPad
    • For iPads with Face ID / no Home button (USB-C or Lightning):
      • Press and quickly release Volume Up.
      • Press and quickly release Volume Down.
      • Press and hold the Top (Power) button until the Apple logo appears (hold for ~20–30 seconds).
    • For iPads with a Home button:
      • Press and hold both the Home button and the Top (Power) button.
      • Keep holding until you see the Apple logo (may take ~20 seconds).

  3. Other checks: If it still won’t start
    • Check the screen: Shine a light at the screen — if you see a faint image, the backlight might have failed.
    • Connect to a computer: Plug into a Mac/PC with iTunes or Finder. If the computer detects the iPad, it may need a restore.
  4. Possible Hardware Issues
    • If the iPad still doesn’t respond:
      • The battery could be dead or disconnected.

      • The charging port may be damaged.

      • Internal hardware fault.
