The Displayscreen (TV) is showing a black screen or is offline

This guide provides comprehensive steps to diagnose and resolve issues where your display screen (TV) is showing a black screen or is offline.

Please follow these steps systematically to identify and fix the problem.

  1. Verify Display Screen (TV) Power and Connectivity

First, ensure the display screen itself is receiving power.
    • Check that the power cable is securely plugged into both the back of the TV and a functional power outlet.
    • Confirm that the power indicator light on the TV is on. If not, try pressing the power button on the TV itself, not just the remote, to ensure it's not in standby mode.
  2. Inspect HDMI Cable Connections

The most common cause of a black screen is a loose or unplugged HDMI cable connecting your computer (PC) to the TV.
    • Carefully unplug and then firmly replug both ends of all HDMI cables. Ensure they are fully seated in their respective ports on both the computer and the TV. Sometimes, even a slight looseness can disrupt the signal.
  3. Address HDMI Extender Malfunctions

If your display suite is using an HDMI extender to bridge a longer distance between your computer and the TV, the extender itself might be malfunctioning.
    • Perform a power cycle on the HDMI extender. This typically involves unplugging its power adapter for 10-15 seconds and then plugging it back in. This can often resolve temporary glitches.
  4. Power Cycle TV and PC
    • Sequential Power Cycling: A systematic power cycle of both the TV and the PC can often resolve communication issues between the devices.
      • Turn on the TV: Ensure the TV is powered on.
      • Power Off PC (Soft Restart): Press and hold the power button on the PC for approximately 5 seconds until it completely shuts down. Then, press the power button once briefly to switch it back on. Allow the PC to boot up fully and check if the display returns.
      • Power Off PC (Hard Restart): If the soft restart does not work, unplug the power cable from the back of the PC. Wait for at least 5 seconds to ensure all residual power is drained. Then, plug the power cable back in and restart the PC.
  5. Select the correct Input Source on the TV

The TV might be on the wrong input channel, even if all cables are connected correctly.
    • Using your TV's remote control, locate and press the "Source" or "Input" button. A menu will typically appear, listing various input options (e.g., HDMI 1, HDMI 2, AV, Component). Select the correct HDMI input to which your computer is connected (e.g., HDMI1). If you are unsure which HDMI port is being used, try each HDMI option until the display appears.
  6. Restart iPad

Restarting the iPad can sometimes resolve connectivity problems.
    • Perform a full restart of your iPad. After the iPad has restarted, retest the connectivity to the display screen. Ensure any relevant apps or mirroring features are re-enabled.
